Reflection & feedback during critique

Colour overall is simple and delicate, using black, white and silver. It allows the surprise pop of colour when the viewer looks down at the bowl to be more effective
I liked the standing table height of the shelf, because it draws the viewer in by forcing them to lean closer in order to be able to see the drawings and the painting properly.
Viewers thought the work was quite frightening and nightmarish
Even though the drawings and paintings were 2D, the way I created depth through shading, or through the literal depth of the bowl made it seem sculpture-esque. Even the subject matter in itself presents quite three-dimensional, so it was interesting to explore and navigate the boundary between 2D and 3D.
I liked the level of detail I put in as it really adds to the intimacy of the work already created by the small scale and close presentation. The delicacy created through detail mirrors the fragility of the thin bin liner that I wrapped around myself, creating continuity throughout the process development
I think the concept was quite strong throughout because I was consistent in the use of the primary materials (plates) and secondary materials (cutlery and standing table to add on to the plates), as well as colour palette and texture of the drawings and paintings
Viewers liked the way I recalled texture in the work, such as how the ridges along the circumference of the paper plates were shown also in the how I drew and paint the vertical stretching of the bin liner that looked alike
I liked how clean and simple the works turned out, as well as my presentation of it because it focused the attention on the drawings and painting with no need for excessive background “noise”. The cutlery was also perfectly aligned and so were the paper plates, adding to the organised look
I think it was a good demonstration of my technical skill but it was also strong in concept and had a lot of potential for different interpretations. I didn’t try to push one single meaning, and I liked how the work wasn’t leading, but still revolved around the theme of eating. One interpretation was that the paper plates on the wall were windows or portholes to another world, and the faces squashed up against it made it seem like they were trying to push their way through the window to the other side, where someone - the viewer, is trying to enjoy a meal. However there are physical barriers to prevent this - the material cloaking the face as well as the paper “window” itself. Another interpretation was that the work was like a machine - where the plates were examples of food that can be ordered, and the bowl shows what was actually ordered. Another interpretation involved my use of string to link the bowl to the floor. It reminded them of a drain - which would signify the ending, where food is excreted. The beginning would be at the head - where the bowl was, and the cutlery there signifies how food is consumed. There was this idea of food travelling in a journey downwards, where the string would be the body. It’s thinness and fragility and how it was a direct line from head (consumption) to drain (excretion) made them think of an eating disorder, and how this visually represented how food travelled.

Possible improvements and next steps:

Incorporate more use of string by using thin thread to sew together the plates
create a hall of similar drawings that span the entire wall, so it would add to the horror theme because it would look like I am collecting or entrapping heads/souls
