Initial ideas:

- Bringing 2D imagery into the third dimension through use of varied materials

Collecting materials:

I went to a junk shop in my local area as well as roadside market stalls to find some magazines, books, or anything that contained interesting imagery. I wanted to find material that was visually intriguing as well as culturally significant, preferably material that I could use to document the passage of time and how culture evolved throughout history. I found the 1991 published book “Royal Romances No. 31. Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (The Love Affairs That Shaped History)“ and found that it contained many photographs of portraits and paintings of the King and his wives that I could use. I also found a January 1976 issue of the magazine “photoplay film monthly” which contained many photographs of well known male and female actors and celebrities at the time, and photographs relating to film and the release of “Jaws”. Many of the celebrity photographs were large face shots in black and white, and there was also smaller full-body photographs as well. Some pages were also in colour, and the paper used for this magazine was incredibly thin with the texture of newspaper, yet also glossy. The book on Henry VIII was printed on glossy but thicker paper, so I was interested in exploring how both books could work differently in collage based on the size and subject matter of the photographs, as well as the texture and thickness of the paper itself. I also found a few more books including a tourist guide book filled with photographs of attractions like museums, bars and aquariums, and an old magazine about football club Tottenham Hotspur, but my collages would be predominantly made from the first two books mentioned.
